Bling penguin

I am reading a very exciting book at the moment called The Great Penguin Rescue by Dyan deNapoli which is all about our endangered African Penguins and the amazing rescue of thousands of them after a devastating oil tanker spill a few years ago SO I was almost tempted to buy this little Swarovski crystal penguin I saw in the window of Spilhaus in Constantia Village shopping centre, until I saw the price. For the same price I could adopt a real penguin through SANCCOB.

Rainbow nation

Cape Town is still glowing in the aftermath of the World Cup - and the rainbow still very much in evidence despite the rain eventually getting the better of it this morning. It has been very wet and chilly over the last few days.

Street baby

This elegant woman looks like someone's gogo (granny) who shouldn't be begging on the street corner - especially in today's rain. It is very blustery and squalls are sweeping over the peninsula with the promise of blue sky at times - but on the whole a soggy day for the Portugal - Northern Korea match in the Cape Town stadium. I hear Portugal is making short work of the Northern Koreans.

Perhaps not quite the gift of choice for Father's Day tomorrow.

A winter's scene

Coming out of the shops this evening I was reminded that its nearly midwinter as it was already dark at only half past six.

Blow our trumpet

Today is stormy and rain is threatening but these vuvuzelas at Pick 'n Pay Supermarket helped brighten my day. South Africa has this wonderfully crazy tradition of blowing vuvuzelas at soccer matches and vuvuzelas emit a blast of noise powerful enough to deafen, so anyone planning to attend the World Cup should invest in a pair of ear plugs first!

Charmed

World Cup Soccer fever hots up here and every shop window has a soccer theme. Supporters of the English Soccer team (that arrived in South Africa just over an hour ago) will find some little St George crosses in amongst the soccer charms on display here. They will need all the luck they can get as they have left out the two players that might have won them the cup - Darren Bent and Theo Walcott.
