Desmond Tutu

D is for Desmond Tutu, our beloved "Arch".

In 2004, Claudette Schreuders was commissioned to do four life size bronzes of South Africa's Nobel Peace Prize Laureates, Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, Albert Luthuli and F.W. de Klerk for the Waterfront in Cape Town. This is Desmond.
Does it work? There has been a lot of criticism of the four statues - as they depict four men with some gravitas yet are quite quirky. I prefer them to the usual bronze statues, and the seagulls find these guys quite difficult to perch on. More ABC Wednesday.

  1. I can't think that I've seen them yet, but I will hopefully be down in Cape Town next weekend and will make sure to pop down for a look.

  2. Are they lit up at night? That could be a great pic.

  4. They are quirky but quite unique, look as though they could be the real people standing there, small statues with big dreams. I like the grouping.
